July Reflections

Doing

Inhaling Milkshakes

That’s it, that’s the tweet.

Impromptu Road Trip

Dropping off my brother at camp in the forests of Massachusetts granted me with a 2-day vacation from the city that I didn’t know I needed. I breathed in air that wasn’t polluted and got to sleep in pitch-black silence. Which, granted, is terrifying, but a good break every once in a while.

Going to the Library

I’ve just started going back to the New York Public Library with a fellow actor friend and yes, I insisted they renew the card I got when I was ten years old. The NYPL branch at Lincoln Center has a huge array of plays and you can check out up to fifty (50!!!) items at a time. If you want a good selection from any time before 2010, the NYPL is your spot.

Reading

Airline Highway by Lisa D’Amour

In the parking lot of the Hummingbird Hotel, near New Orleans, the residents prepare Miss Ruby's funeral (while she is still alive). A host of characters with big dreams and not a lot to live on confront each other and themselves in this incredible tribute to a people that fight to survive in an ever evolving world.

The Sleeper by Catherine Butterfield

This play is about a suburban mom who has affair with man who just might be a terrorist. Then she gets her hands on a gun and does something that lands her in jail. This is a great play that exposes middle America for the shortcomings it has when it comes to other people’s culture and essentially, non-whiteness.

The Altruists by Nicky Silver

The Altruists about a group of people who see themselves as altruistic, but when it comes down to their personal freedoms or sacrificing an innocent person, they chose to save themselves every time. I’m not sure if it was intended in this way, but I see it as a metaphor for real people in our world who present themselves as altruistic while hoarding riches and opportunities.

Seeing

Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel is just the beginning of Marvel breaking the mold. At least, that is what it seems like in combination with the upcoming SheHulk. This series feels so different from the past couple of Marvel shows they have put out (probably because the majority of the characters aren’t white). This series is exciting, rich with inter-generational love and culture and depicts teenage angst in the best way.

Petite Maman

If you’re crying 15 minutes in and you don’t stop, it’s a good movie. French simplicity always wins, as is proven with this no-frills approach to time travel. This is truly an amazing film- the mother daughter relationship explored in the way they have done it here is absolutely incredible and heart-wrenching and every single actor was palme d’or worthy - but especially Joséphine and Gabrielle Sanz.

Keep Sweet Pray and Obey

This four-part docu-series is on Netflix and is absolutely mind-blowing. All of the cult documentaries usually are, but this one in particular was interesting as the FLDS did not try to attract people to join its compound, but grew the group themselves by marrying women young and having them pump out babies yearly. This docu-series is worth the watch, at least to understand the stories of the “apostates” of this group.
