October Reflections

Doing

Making my Halloween Costume

One of the Halloween costumes I had decided on for this year was Scar, from The Lion King. Not finding anything to my liking online, I decided to make the costume myself. I have a very limited knowledge of making clothing from scratch (and without a pattern). This involved using myself as a dress form and stabbing myself repeatedly until I had made and acceptable jumpsuit (and tail!) for my costume. Incredibly stressful but 10/10 would do again.

Monet’s Garden

I attended the “previews” of Monet’s Garden Interactive experience and it was quite a show! The upstairs portion provided a history of Monet’s life through images and written panels and the downstairs area had 360° projected works as well as audio narration. My favorite part was how the upstairs portion actually smelled like the flowers in the paintings

Mental Health Walks

Throughout October I tried walking everywhere. This was actually quite rewarding as the weather was nice and the scenery was beautiful. Above is a picture of Central Park mid-October as I walked across 59th street. I feel that the more we are outside, the better our mental health is. Because I often work from home, getting outside at least once a day is all the more important.

Reading

27 Short Plays by Christopher Durang

Christopher Durang is a comedic genius. I loved every single one of these plays and am surprised some of them have never been performed (on a large scale). It is interesting to see these short dramadies, comedies and parodies in this forum and the dark humor woven into each one of them..

Bold Girls by Rona Munro

Another Irish play! I really like the contrast of the unbridled comedy of the first half to the dark revelation of secrets in the second. This play takes place in ___ in (year). Friends reveal secrets to each other and relationships are strained and torn when long-hidden things are revealed. This play has no male characters, only women, which is always a plus!

Tarot Book by ?? someone

I have been increasingly interested in reading tarot cards in my everyday life. This practice is not binding or something to be held in absolutes but something that is rather comforting and adds a sense of routine. This book in particular is very helpful in reading what the cards can mean in different situations.

Seeing

The Cost of Living

Wow wow wow. This show is absolutely brilliant. Each actor has incredible talent and they all balance each other out so effortlessly. In such a short span of time, we as an audience laughed, gasped, held our breath and cried. The only qualm I have with this show was that the exposition seemed a little long, but other than that the shocking moments weren’t what we expected as an audience and the fact that it wasn’t such a happy ending but a new beginning is what made this play so beautiful.

Harry Potter

What a classic case of sorry not sorry. I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, it is my favorite comfort film(s) and it deserved to be rewatched as Robbie Coltrane recently passed away. Every time an actor passes who took part in this series of films I feel like it is losing a part of my childhood. Robbie Coltrane himself once said, “The legacy of the movies is that my children's generation will show [the films] to their children, so you could be watching in 50 years time, easy. I'll not be here, sadly, but Hagrid will. Yes."

The Peaky Blinders

This show gives me so much anxiety but it is too good to pass up. The actors are phenomenal, the storylines aren’t too complicated without being boring and there is always a twist - but the characters we love don’t always escape unscathed. It is high stakes drama that stays realistic and this season was no different. The finale episode tied everything together in such a satisfying way that still wasn’t a Disney ending but that made sense for all of the characters still living.
